Kazoola "Cudjoe" Lewis was a former slave that was brought to America. His best friend, Charlie Lewis, wanted to see what area was available so he jumped in a canoe and paddled west on the Three Mile Creek where he saw a piece of land on the water accessible for fishing. He decided to settle there with his family and called the area Lewis Quarters. Lewis Quarters is a small strip of land on the east side of the intersection of Three Mile Creek and Conception Street, just behind the lumber mill. Today, it is used by locals for fishing and for launching their canoes, paddleboards, and jet skis into the creek on the west side of the intersection, it is used by locals as a fishing pier. The Mobile County Commissioners purchased the land surrounding Lewis Quarters, and under Commissioner Mercia Ludgood, the all new Lewis Landing will include a new boat launch, fishing pier, and updated playground with walking trails.
