A great starting point is the all-new Africatown Welcome Center, a beautifully designed hub that introduces guests to the story of the Clotilda, the founding families, and the modern community carrying their legacy forward. Nearby, the Africatown Historic Cemetery holds the sacred resting place of many original Africatown founders and Clotilda survivors, offering a quiet space for reflection and honor.
At the Mobile County Training School, the oldest continuous operating black training school in Alabama, visitors can see the Africatown Freedom Bell, a symbol of perseverance and educational excellence that has shaped generations. Outdoor history lovers can explore Hog Bayou, the traditional hunting and fishing grounds used by Clotilda descendants who relied on the bayou for food, trade, and cultural practices.
Other key stops include Lewis Landing, once a vital river access point for transportation and community life, and the Cleon Jones Homestead, home of the Major League Baseball legend whose accomplishments brought national attention to Africatown.
Whether you are walking the grounds where founders lived, standing in places where their voices echo, or discovering lesser-known gems scattered across the community, each site in Africatown tells a chapter of strength, survival, and triumph. Together, they create an unforgettable experience that connects past and present in one of America’s most historically significant neighborhoods.

The mission of Visit Africatown is to inspire visitors from around the world by showcasing the historic, cultural, and natural assets of Africatown, fostering responsible tourism, and ensuring that the powerful story of the Clotilda survivors is preserved and shared with dignity, authenticity, and respect.

Our vision is to position Africatown as a premier global cultural history destination where visitors from around the world can experience the strength, resilience, and living legacy of the Clotilda community, while supporting sustainable growth and opportunity for Africatown’s families.
